About Russian Wire Money
Thin silver wire coins hammered into irregular shapes by hand. Called dengi or kopeks. Each coin was unique in shape. The wire was cut to length and hammered with a die. Wire money was used in Russia from the 10th century until Peter the Great. The irregular shapes made counting difficult, so coins were weighed in bundles. The wire money period represents the long, isolated medieval economy of Russia.
