About Roman Denarius
The backbone of the Roman economy for 450 years. One denarius equaled one days wage for a laborer or soldier. Featured the helmeted head of Roma on the obverse and the legendary she-wolf or war gods on the reverse. The word denarius gives us the abbreviation d for penny in pre-decimal British currency. Julius Caesar minted special denarii to pay his legions during the civil war. Contained about 3.9 grams of silver.
