About Athenian Owl Tetradrachm
The most famous coin of the ancient Greek world. Featured Athena on the obverse and her sacred owl on the reverse. The owl represented wisdom and was associated with the goddess. Athens minted these coins from silver mined at Laurion using slave labor. The tetradrachm was widely accepted across the Mediterranean for 400 years. The inscription AOE stood for of the Athenians.
