About US Jefferson Wartime Nickel
During World War II, nickel was needed for armor plating. From late 1942 to 1945, the composition changed to 35 percent silver, 56 percent copper, and 9 percent manganese. A large mint mark appeared above Monticello to distinguish wartime nickels. The 1942-P also features the first P mint mark on a US coin. Wartime nickels are worth more than face value due to silver content.
