About Vijayanagara Coin
The coinage of the Vijayanagara Empire, the last great Hindu empire of southern India. Featured Hindu deities including Venkateshwara, Lakshmi, and Balakrishna. The gold pagoda was the standard gold coin, weighing about 3.4 grams. Vijayanagara coins circulated widely in Indian Ocean trade. Portuguese traders used Vijayanagara pagodas. The empire was defeated at the Battle of Talikota in 1565 but coinage continued under successor states. The coins blend South Indian and Islamic design elements.
