Replaced the Soviet ruble transitionally and then the coupon som in 1994. Uzbekistan was cautious in economic reforms. The som is not freely convertible. Uzbek banknotes feature historical monuments including the Registan of Samarkand. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan was established in 1991. The som has depreciated significantly. Uzbekistan has gradually liberalized its economy under President Mirziyoyev since 2016.
