About French Franc

One of the oldest currency names still in use until the euro. First minted as a gold coin in 1360 to pay the ransom for King John II. The name means free, referring to the king being freed. The franc germinal of Napoleon set the standard for the Latin Monetary Union. The new franc of 1960 replaced 100 old francs. The franc was replaced by the euro in 2002 at 6.55957 francs per euro.
