About Indian Rupee
First issued by Sher Shah Suri in 1540. The word rupee comes from rupiya meaning shaped coin or stamped silver. The British East India Company issued its own rupees starting in 1671. The rupee was the first currency to use the comma for digit grouping. Still used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Seychelles, and formerly in Burma, Kenya, Uganda, and Mauritius. The Indian rupee is the oldest continuously used currency in Asia.
