About US Dollar

The worlds primary reserve currency. Established by the Coinage Act of 1792. Over 60 percent of global foreign exchange reserves are held in dollars. The greenback nickname comes from Demand Notes issued during the Civil War. The dollar bill has remained largely unchanged since 1929, the oldest US paper design still in use. Over 14 billion one dollar bills are in circulation. The dollar sign may derive from the Spanish pillar dollar with its Columns of Hercules wrapped in a banner.
