About Umayyad Fals
See Islamic Fals. Early Umayyad copper coins retained Byzantine and Sasanian imagery before the reform of Abd al-Malik. Some early fals featured the caliph standing, others the Cross on steps modified with Islamic additions. These transitional coins document the gradual Islamization of coinage. Thousands of varieties were minted across the vast caliphate from Spain to Central Asia. Each city had its own designs and denominations.
