About Turkish Lira
Replaced the Ottoman kurus as the main currency. The lira was originally strong, worth about 1 US dollar in the 1930s. Decades of high inflation eroded its value drastically. By 2001, one US dollar bought over 1.6 million lira. The 2005 redenomination removed six zeros. The new Turkish lira became simply the Turkish lira in 2009. The central bank has struggled with high inflation in recent years.
