See Three Cent Silver entry. The trime was designed by James B. Longacre. The Type 1 had no border stars and was so thin it bent easily. The Type 2 from 1854 had a wider border with stars. The Type 3 from 1859 simplified the design. The 1873 trime is the rarest date with only proof specimens struck. Over 60 million Type 1 trimes were minted but few survive in high grade.
