About US Trade Dollar
Minted specifically for trade with Asia. Contained more silver than the standard silver dollar to compete with the Mexican peso. Featured Liberty seated on a bale of merchandise facing the sea. The trade dollar was legal tender in the US only up to five dollars. Many trade dollars were counterstamped with Chinese merchant chop marks. Discontinued in 1885. Some trade dollars have dozens of chop marks.
