About British Threepence
Also called the threepenny bit. Worth three old pence. The silver threepence was minted until 1945. The 12-sided brass threepence, introduced in 1937, was more popular and practical. The brass version featured a portcullis on the reverse. The unusual shape helped distinguish it from other coins by touch in the dark or pocket. The threepence was included in Christmas puddings as a lucky coin.
