About US Three Dollar Gold
An unusual denomination minted from 1854 to 1889. Designed by James B. Longacre. Created to facilitate purchase of sheets of 3 cent stamps. The 1870-S three dollar gold piece is unique, with only one specimen known, discovered in 2005. The 1889 has a mintage of only 5,000. The coin was never popular and saw limited circulation. Most survivors are in high grade. The three dollar gold piece is collected as a type coin rather than by date.
