About US Three Cent Nickel
Introduced near the end of the Civil War to replace the tiny silver trime. Made of copper-nickel alloy like the modern five cent piece. Featured Liberty on the obverse and a Roman numeral III on the reverse. Minted until 1889. The three cent nickel was the first US coin to use the copper-nickel alloy. The whitish color gave it the appearance of silver at a glance.
