Byzantine Tetarteron
About Byzantine Tetarteron
A gold coin introduced by Nikephoros II Phokas, slightly lighter and wider than the histamenon. The tetarteron was created to reduce government gold expenditures while maintaining the appearance of full weight coins. Merchants complained about the distinction. The tetarteron was unpopular and confusing. By the 11th century, the tetarteron had become a copper coin while the gold version was discontinued. The monetary confusion contributed to the economic decline of Byzantium.
