Tibetan Tangka
About Tibetan Tangka
The silver coin of Tibet before Chinese incorporation. Featured Buddhist symbols including the eight auspicious signs. The tangka was hand struck, not machine made. Tibet also used Chinese silver ingots and Indian rupees. The 1904 British expedition under Younghusband found a primitive but functioning monetary system. Tibetan coins are collected for their unique designs and connection to Buddhist culture. Tibetan coinage ended after Chinese incorporation in 1951.
