About German Taler
The ancestor of the dollar. Large silver coin minted throughout the German speaking world. The Joachimstaler from Bohemia gave the coin its name, shortened to taler in German and dollar in English. Over 1,000 different German states and cities minted their own taler varieties. The Conventionstaler of 1754 standardized the weight. The taler was the model for the Maria Theresa thaler and the US silver dollar.
