About US four Dollar Gold Stella Detail
See US Stella entry. The Stella was proposed to approximate the Latin Monetary Union standard. At 7 grams of gold, it was close to the French 20 franc and Austrian 8 florin coins. Congress never authorized the Stella for regular production. Several hundred Flowing Hair Stellas were struck and distributed to congressmen as samples. Many show evidence of having been mounted as jewelry, suggesting they were given as gifts to dignitaries.
