Introduced after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011. The South Sudanese pound replaced the Sudanese pound at par. The Bank of South Sudan was established in 2011. The currency has suffered from hyperinflation due to the civil war that began in 2013. The South Sudanese pound features John Garang, the founding father of the nation. The currency is not freely convertible. South Sudan produces oil but the conflict has devastated the economy.
