Somaliland Shilling
About Somaliland Shilling
The currency of the self declared Republic of Somaliland, which is not internationally recognized. The Somaliland shilling has no official exchange rate and is not backed by any central bank reserves. Despite this, it circulates and maintains value through market mechanisms. The currency demonstrates that money can function based on social convention alone. Somaliland coins are produced locally and banknotes are printed with simple designs. The economy relies heavily on livestock exports and remittances.
