About US Small Cent Variants

The Flying Eagle cent of 1856 to 1858 was followed by the Indian Head cent of 1859 to 1909 and the Lincoln cent of 1909 to present. The composition changed from copper-nickel to bronze in 1864. The 1909-S VDB and 1914-D are key Lincoln cent dates. The 1922 plain cent has no D mintmark due to a filled die. The 1943 steel cent was made from zinc coated steel to save copper for wartime use. The 1955 doubled die cent is the most famous US error coin.
