About Sierra Leonean Leone
The leone replaced the British West African pound in 1964. The name comes from the Sierra Leone, meaning Lion Mountains, the name given by Portuguese explorers. Sierra Leonean banknotes feature national heroes and landmarks. The Bank of Sierra Leone was established in 1964. The leone redenominated in 2022, removing three zeros. Sierra Leone is recovering from a devastating civil war (1991 to 2002) and an Ebola outbreak (2014 to 2016).
