About British Sixpence

Also called the tanner. Worth two and a half old pence. Featured the monarch on the obverse and various designs on the reverse. The sixpence was traditionally placed in Christmas puddings for good luck. The coin featured in the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence. Minted until 1970. The sixpence remained legal tender at 2.5 new pence until 1980. Collectors seek silver sixpences from each year.
