About Roman Siliqua
A small silver coin introduced by Constantine. The siliqua replaced the denarius as the standard silver coin of the later empire. Weighed about 3.4 grams initially but declined over time. The siliqua circulated alongside the gold solidus and bronze follis. Some siliquae show deliberate chop marks, tests by merchants to verify silver content. The Victory type siliqua is common in hoards from Britain.
