About English Short Cross Penny
Minted under Henry II through Henry III. Featured a short cross design rather than a long cross extending to the edge. The short cross coinage was remarkably standardized for its era, with consistent weight and silver purity. Over 200 million were minted at mints across England. Replaced by the long cross penny in 1247 to deter clipping, as the long cross design made it obvious when silver had been shaved from the edges.
