About Italian Scudo
The main silver coin of the Italian states before unification. Featured the ruling pope or duke. The Papal scudo bore the popes portrait and coat of arms. The Sardinian scudo was used in Savoy. The scudo was roughly equivalent to the Spanish dollar. Italian states minted beautiful scudi during the Renaissance. The coins of the Papal States are particularly sought after by collectors.
