Russian Ruble
About Russian Ruble
One of the oldest currency names in the world, dating to the 13th century. The word ruble may come from rubit meaning to chop, referring to pieces chopped from a silver ingot. Peter the Great decimalized the ruble in 1704, making Russia the first country to adopt a decimal currency. The Soviet ruble was non-convertible and artificially valued. The modern Russian ruble was introduced in 1998 after the 1998 financial crisis redenomination.
