About Roanoke Half Dollar
A commemorative half dollar marking the 350th anniversary of the Roanoke Colony, the Lost Colony. Featured Sir Walter Raleigh on the obverse and Eleanor Dare holding Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America, on the reverse. Only 50,000 were minted. The Roanoke half dollar was sold during the 1937 celebration on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The design symbolizes the mystery of the vanished colony.
