Brazilian Real
About Brazilian Real
Introduced in July 1994 as part of the Plano Real, ending decades of hyperinflation. At its launch, 1 real equaled 1 US dollar. Previous currencies included the cruzeiro, cruzado, and cruzeiro real, all destroyed by inflation. The real was initially pegged to the dollar but floated freely after 1999. Brazil was the first country to adopt polymer banknotes nationwide for all denominations. Featured images of Brazilian fauna on the banknotes.
