About Indian Punch Mark Coin
The earliest coinage of India, made by punching symbols onto silver bars. Each symbol represented a king, guild, or local authority. The symbols included suns, trees, hills, animals, and geometric patterns. The Mauryan Empire standardized the system with five official punches. Over 500 different punch marks are catalogued. Alexander the Great encountered these coins during his Indian campaign.
