About Puerto Rican Coinage
Coins minted for Puerto Rico under Spanish colonial rule. The 1895 peso and fractional denominations featured the Spanish monarch. After the Spanish American War of 1898, Puerto Rico used US currency. The 1895 Puerto Rican coins are collected as the last colonial coinage of the island. The coins were minted in Madrid. The silver peso was equivalent to the US dollar. Puerto Rico adopted US currency officially in 1901.
