About Hebrew Prutah
The small bronze coin of Judea under the Hasmonean and Herodian dynasties. Featured Jewish symbols including the pomegranate, helmet, star, and cornucopia. The prutah was the everyday coin of Roman period Judea. The widow mite mentioned in the New Testament is likely a Hasmonean prutah. During the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132 to 136 AD, rebels struck coins overstriking Roman coins with Jewish symbols and paleo Hebrew inscriptions.
