Princely State Coin
About Princely State Coin
Coins of the 565 princely states that coexisted with British India. Each state had its own coinage, creating enormous variety. Hyderabad, Mysore, Travancore, and Jaipur issued the most coins. The Hyderabad rupee is the most distinctive, with Urdu inscriptions. Many princely states adopted British India coin types with local modifications. Princely state coins were demonetized at independence in 1947 but some remained in circulation for years. Over 100 princely states issued their own coinage.
