About Portuguese India Coin
Coins of Portuguese India, covering Goa, Daman, and Diu. Portuguese coins were minted in Goa from the 1500s. Featured the Portuguese coat of arms and the cross of the Order of Christ. The Portuguese Indian rupia replaced the reis in 1958. Portuguese India coinage ended when India annexed Goa in 1961. The coins are collected as evidence of the Portuguese colonial presence in India, the first European colony in Asia.
