About Swedish Plate Money
The largest coins ever produced, made of copper plates weighing up to 19.7 kg. Sweden had copper mines but little silver, so the largest copper coins were worth a full silver daler. Plate money was produced from 1644 to 1776. The 8 daler coin measured 30 by 70 cm. Workers supposedly carried these on their backs. The coins were impractical and often stored in piles. Counterfeiters were deterred by the sheer size of the genuine coins.
