The kina replaced the Australian dollar at independence in 1975. Named after the kina shell, traditionally used as currency in the Papua New Guinea highlands. The toea is the subunit, named after a traditional shell. The Bank of Papua New Guinea was established in 1973. PNG banknotes feature national symbols including the bird of paradise, the national parliament, and the kina shell. PNG is resource rich with gold, copper, oil, and gas exports.
