About Weimar Papiermark
The German currency during World War I and the Weimar Republic. Decoupled from gold in 1914 to finance the war. The resulting hyperinflation of 1923 was devastating. At the peak, a loaf of bread cost billions of marks. Workers were paid twice daily and rushed to spend before prices rose again. Children used stacks of banknotes as building blocks. The crisis ended with the introduction of the rentenmark in November 1923.
