About Italian Papal Coin
The coinage of the Papal States, featuring the reigning pope. Papal coins were minted in Rome for over 1,000 years. The gold scudo and silver giulio were the main denominations. Papal coins bore the popes portrait, coat of arms, and title. The coins of Alexander VI Borgia are notorious. Pope Pius VII coins span the Napoleonic period. Papal coinage ended when Italy absorbed the Papal States in 1870.
