About UK One Pence
The decimal one penny replaced the old penny which had been used for over 1,200 years. Featured a portcullis on the reverse initially, later the royal shield. Made of copper plated steel since 1992. Over 12 billion have been minted. The 1p is the most numerous British coin. Despite periodic calls for its elimination, the 1p remains popular. Research shows removing the penny would disproportionately affect the poor through rounding.
