Emergency Money
About Emergency Money
Notgeld or emergency money issued by German municipalities during World War I and the Weimar hyperinflation. When the central government could not supply enough small change, cities issued their own paper notes and coins. Notgeld became a collecting craze, with thousands of different designs. Some featured fairy tales, historical scenes, or satirical commentary. The notgeld period produced some of the most visually diverse paper money in history. Over 100,000 different notgeld issues are catalogued.
