About English Noble
The first English gold coin produced in quantity. Featured Edward III in a ship, possibly referencing the naval victory at Sluys. Worth 6 shillings and 8 pence, one third of a pound. The noble was popular in international trade and widely imitated in Flanders and Holland. The gold came from West African mines traded through merchants in London. The noble was replaced by the angel and ryal under later monarchs.
