About UK New Penny

The original decimal penny was called the new penny to distinguish it from the old pre decimal penny. The word new was dropped in 1982. The switch from old to new pence was accompanied by a massive public education campaign including advertisements, television programs, and school materials. The old system of 12 pence to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound had been unchanged since Anglo Saxon times.
