About Malaysian Ringgit
The ringgit replaced the Malayan dollar in 1967. Ringgit means jagged in Malay, referring to the serrated edges of Spanish silver coins. Pegged to the US dollar from 1998 to 2005 to combat the Asian financial crisis. The ringgit is now a managed float. Malaysian banknotes feature the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and local flowers. Bank Negara Malaysia was established in 1959.
