About Mexican Peso

The peso was the basis for the US dollar, with the Spanish dollar circulating alongside American coins until 1857. The dollar sign originated from the Mexican peso. The peso was one of the most stable currencies in the Americas until the 1970s. The 1994 Tequila Crisis saw the peso lose half its value in weeks. Redenominated in 1993 as the nuevo peso at 1,000 old pesos to 1 new peso. The nuevo was dropped in 1996.
