About Mughal Rupee
The silver rupee of the Mughal Empire, first issued by Sher Shah Suri. Standardized at approximately 11.5 grams of silver. Akbar the Great expanded the system to include gold mohurs and copper dams. The Mughal rupee was so pure that it became the preferred trade coin of the Indian Ocean. The British continued the rupee system after colonizing India. The word rupiya comes from Sanskrit rupa meaning shaped or stamped.
