The currency of Mauritania, one of only two non decimal currencies alongside the Malagasy ariary. 1 ouguiya equals 5 khoums, meaning fifths. Replaced the CFA franc when Mauritania left the franc zone. Redenominated in 2018 at 10 to 1. Mauritanian banknotes feature Islamic architecture, desert landscapes, and fishing scenes. The Central Bank of Mauritania was established in 1973. Mauritania is a major iron ore exporter and recently discovered significant offshore oil and gas reserves.
