About British Gold Sovereign Modern
The modern sovereign was reintroduced in 1817 after the Napoleonic Wars. Featured George III and Saint George slaying the dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. The sovereign became the cornerstone of the international gold standard. Britain, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and India minted sovereigns. Over 1 billion sovereigns have been produced. Still minted today as bullion coins. The 1937 sovereign of Edward VIII is unique, in the Royal Collection.
