About US Modern Commemorative Coins
Modern commemorative coins resumed in 1982 with the Washington half dollar commemorating the 250th anniversary of George Washingtons birth. Since then, the US Mint has issued 2 to 3 commemorative programs annually. Programs include the 1984 Olympic dollars, 1986 Statue of Liberty coins, and 2000 Library of Congress coins. Modern commemoratives fund various organizations and causes through surcharges added to the purchase price.
